M.Sc. – Master of Science (Agronomy)
Master of Science in Agriculture-Agronomy is specialised Post-Graduate programme that focuses on the scientific study of crop production, cropping system, Environmental impacts, pest management, sustainability, soil management, Water management, climate change, field management, and modern technologies in Agriculture, farming in dry land and rainfed condition. It equips students with the skills to improve crop health, Organic farming, and Precision farming.
- 2 Years
- 4 Semesters
Overview
The program covers key areas such as nutrient management, farm management, crop ecology and Irrigation management. It combines theoretical learning with hands-on experiences in crop production and nutrient management. The course prepares students to contribute to the advancement modern techniques in agriculture. The Department of Agronomy responsible for matters relating to crop production, pest and disease management and poultry production, milk production, soil fertility management, forage and fodder production, grassland development.
Career Opportunities
Post-Graduates can pursue careers in fertilizers industry, research work, Agriculture marketing, extension services, farm manager, cotton board, silk board, TGT- PGT, government agencies. They can also work as Agronomist, environmental scientists, Irrigation department, seed industries, dairy department, FPO (farmers producer organisation), bank, railways, subject matter specialists (SMS) in Krishi Vigyan Kendra,Mass Media Support to Agricultural Extension and Kisan Call Centres, ATM and BTM, SRF, limited and Private companies.
Program Learning Outcomes
Understand advanced concepts in Agronomy and apply them to improving crop growth and development yield and quality characteristics. Develop practical skills to conduct research in it all above the complete scenarios of increasing the production and productivity of crops without affecting the environment and understand the environmental implications of agricultural practices and how to apply sustainable practices in agriculture. It is a hub of scientific exploration and innovation provided to the students. Students will understand the role of nutrition in crop production. Develop practical skills in raising farms and using farming systems in cropped areas. Conduct research in the field of Agronomy and contribute to the advancement of the field.
Labs
Agronomy is the study of plants and their growth, and laboratory equipment plays a crucial role in this field. It is through the use of laboratory equipment that agronomists can carry out tests and experiments that allow them to determine the health of plants, soil fertility, soil pH, organic carbon and nutrients in soil and plants. The results obtained from these tests and experiments are critical in developing better crops and improving yields.
Facilities:
The lab is equipped with cutting-edge instruments and tools, fostering an environment that encourages research, experimentation, Greenhouses, growth chambers, controlled temperature germinators, low temperature storage facilities, seed technology laboratories, tissue culture laboratories. Hi-tech classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, and subject-specific instructional farms play a very significant role in effective curricula delivery aiming at enhancing practical skills among the students. Audio visual aids like multimedia projectors for use of online and real-time internet resources. Access to the website relevant to the course/discipline through Wi-Fi facilities. Well equipped with all the modern machinery and equipment to support the students with the analysis they need, to solve their agricultural problems, and to improve the quality and quantity of the agricultural outputs. Subject-specific laboratories in various domains are available to fulfil the need of the course curricula and for the effective conduct of practical classes. The college has one farm sites with a specific area provided to the respective domain for practical training of students regarding various agricultural operations such as land preparation, plant protection measures, sowing methods, cultivation, harvesting etc. The workshop is utilized by students and trainees to develop a wide range of skills with the use of tools during practical classes and project work. Our facilities include a modern weather forecasting station, vermi-compost unit. The college has developed a crop cafeteria, where rabi and kharif crops are grown for a demonstration to the students. The college has established an instructional bee-keeping unit for student training and practical. Apart from honey production, the bees also play a vital role in the pollination of numerous fruits and vegetables, thus, contributing to the enhancement of yield. The students get hands-on training activities in various aspects of honeybee management, i.e., the establishment of honeybee colonies, beehives management, honey collection and extraction, and processing and marketing of honey.
Research Opportunities:
Researchers in agronomy and agroecology work to develop and improve cropping systems and weed science, including alternative approaches and management strategies. Emphasis is on improving production efficiency and profitability in an environmentally sound approach that benefits society. Mechanisms of crop physiology and ecology underlying plant responses to the environment are emphasized. Research areas include sustainable agriculture, environmental physiology of agronomic crops, and plant nutrition. We encourage our students to engage in research projects and provide them with opportunities to work on cutting-edge research topic and preparing them for future careers in industry, farm, university, seed company etc.
Safety:
Safety is our utmost priority and the lab adheres to strict safety protocols. Students are provided with lab coats, gloves, and safety goggles to ensure a secure learning environment. Trained lab technicians and faculty members closely supervise all experiments to maintain a safe and accident-free space. Wear closed-toe shoes at all times in the lab. Be sure that moving parts of mechanical apparatus are guarded to prevent hazardous contact. Maintain your lab area reasonably neat and uncluttered.
